How to Make Wood Pellets at Home

Wood pellets are small, compressed pieces of wood used as fuel for heating, cooking, and even animal bedding. They are eco-friendly, low-cost, and easy to make if you have the right materials.

Materials Needed

  • Dry wood waste (sawdust, wood shavings, or wood chips)

  • Grinder or hammer mill

  • Pellet machine or manual pellet press

  • Water (if needed)

  • Drying space or sunlight

Step 1: Collect Wood Waste

Use clean wood waste only. Avoid painted or chemically treated wood, as it is unsafe and harmful.

Step 2: Grind the Wood

Grind the wood into fine sawdust. The smaller the particles, the better the pellets will form.

Step 3: Adjust Moisture

The ideal moisture level is around 10–15%.

  • If the sawdust is too dry, lightly spray water.

  • If it’s wet, dry it in sunlight.

Step 4: Make the Pellets

Put the sawdust into a pellet machine or press. High pressure and heat bind the wood naturally—no glue needed.

Step 5: Dry the Pellets

Fresh pellets are soft. Dry them in open air or sunlight until they become hard and strong.

Step 6: Store Properly

Store pellets in a dry place, away from moisture, to maintain quality.
