Fireplace Wall Part 1 | Builds by Maz

Building a DIY fireplace or media wall is a great way to upgrade your living space with a modern, high-end look. In Part 1, we focus on framing the fireplace/media wall, which is the foundation of the entire build.

This guide is beginner-friendly and suitable for DIYers who want professional-style results.

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Wooden studs (2x4)

  • Measuring tape

  • Spirit level

  • Drill & screws

  • Wall plugs (if fixing to masonry)

  • Stud finder

  • Pencil & square

  • Safety gloves & goggles

Step 1: Planning & Measurements

Start by deciding:

  • Fireplace size

  • TV size and height

  • Overall wall width and depth

Mark everything clearly on the wall and floor. Proper planning avoids mistakes later.

Step 2: Base Frame Construction

Build the base frame using 2x4 studs:

  • Fix the base to the floor securely

  • Ensure it is level

  • This base will support the electric fireplace unit

Step 3: Vertical Stud Framing

Install vertical studs:

  • Fix studs to the base and ceiling

  • Keep equal spacing (usually 16 inches apart)

  • Use a level to ensure everything is straight

Step 4: Fireplace Opening

Create a dedicated opening for the fireplace:

  • Follow the manufacturer’s clearance guidelines

  • Ensure enough airflow space

  • Double-check measurements before fixing

Step 5: TV & Media Space Framing

Frame the TV recess and any side shelving:

  • Add horizontal noggins for strength

  • Plan cable routes and power points

  • Leave space for future wiring

Safety Tips

  • Always wear safety gear

  • Double-check load-bearing points

  • Do not install the fireplace unit yet (that comes later)

What’s Next (Part 2)

In the next part, we’ll cover:

  • Electrical wiring

  • Plasterboard installation

  • Finishing prep

This framing stage is the backbone of your fireplace/media wall—take your time and get it right.
