A soil moisture sensor is an electronic device used to measure the water content in soil. It’s widely used in smart irrigation systems, gardening projects, and agricultural automation to help plants grow healthier by ensuring the soil has the right moisture level.

How a Soil Moisture Sensor Works

Most soil moisture sensors work on the resistive or capacitive principle:

  • Resistive Sensor: Measures resistance between two probes; when soil moisture changes, resistance changes.

  • Capacitive Sensor: Detects changes in capacitance caused by soil water content.

The sensor sends this data to a microcontroller (like Arduino or Raspberry Pi), which can trigger actions such as turning on a water pump.

  4. When the soil is dry, the pump automatically turns on.

Tip: For long-term projects, capacitive soil moisture sensors are better than resistive ones, as they don’t corrode easily.
